Julius Evola on the Dark AgeThis is an excerpt from one of the best introductory texts on tradition and modern esotericism, “Revolt Against the Modern World” by Julius Evola. The original text is from the ancient Visnu Purana, foretelling the fate of mankind, particularly the men and women of the 20th and 21st century, and beyond. Alongside Guenon’s “The Crisis of the Modern World” and Miguel Serrano’s “Nos: Book of the Resurrection”, the writings of Evola provide a solid foundation for all seekers of truth, showing us how to transcend the decadent materialism and rampant nihilism of our age. Speaking of Serrano, Nos: Book of the Resurrection is one of the most difficult books to locate and has been out of print for quite awhile. Used copies go for over $700 and there aren’t any known copies on the internet. I am currently in the process of converting Nos into a PDF e-book so his works can be accessed easily by my readers. It is a crime that his works may never be seen by those worthy few. For my future articles, I will be focusing more on spiritual practices, mainly on sacred Hyperborean symbolism and practical methods of mediation that we can implement in our daily lives.

Julius Evola on the Dark Age (From Revolt Against the Modern World)

Outcastes and barbarians will be masters of the banks of the Indus, Darvika, the Chandrabhaga and Kashmir. These will all be contemporary rulers -of this age- reigning over the earth: kings [rulers] of violent temper… They will seize upon the property of their subjects; they will be of limited power and will for the most part rapidly rise and fall; their lives will be short, their desires insatiable, and they will display but little piety. The people of various countries intermingling with them will follow their example… The prevailing caste will be the Shudra… Vaisyas will abandon agriculture and commerce and gain a livelihood by servitude or the exercise of mechanical arts -proletarization and industrialization- … Kshyatrias instead of protecting will plunder their subjects: and under the pretext of levying customs will rob merchants of their property -crisis of capitalism and of private property; socialization, nationalization, and communism- Wealth -inner- and piety (following one’s dharma) will decrease day by day until the whole world will be wholly depraved. Then property alone will confer rank (the quantity of dollars – economic classes); wealth -material- will be the only source of devotion; passion will be the sole bond of union between the sexes; falsehood will be the only means of success in litigation… Earth will be venerated but for its mineral treasures (unscrupulous exploitation of the soil, demise of the cult of the earth)… Brahmanical clothes will constitute a Brahman… weakness will be the cause of dependence (cowardice, death of fides and honor in the modern political forms)… simple ablution [devoid of the power of the true rite] will be purification (can there really be anything more in the alleged salvation procured in the Christian sacraments?)… In the Kali age men corrupted by unbelievers… will say: “Of what authority are the Vedas? What are gods or Brahmans?” Observance of caste, order and institutes [traditional] will not prevail in the Kali age. Marriages in this age will not be conformable to the ritual, nor will the rules which connect the preceptor and his disciple be in force… A regenerated man will be initiated in any way whatever (democracy applied to the spiritual plain) and such acts of penance as may be performed will be unattended by any results (this refers to a “humanistic” and conformist religion) all orders of life will be common alike to all persons. He who gives away much money will be the master of men and family descent will no longer be a title of supremacy (the end of traditional nobility, advent of bourgeoisie, plutocracy). Men will fix their desires upon riches, even though dishonestly acquired. Men of all degrees will conceit themselves to be equal with Brahmans (the prevarication and presumption of the intellectuals and modern culture). The people will be almost always in dread of dearth and apprehensive of scarcity; and will hence ever be watching the appearances of the sky [the meaning of the religious and superstitious residues typical of modern masses]….. The women will pay no attention to the commands of their husbands or parents….. They will be selfish, abject and slatternly; they will be scolds and liars; they will be indecent and immoral in their conduct and will ever attach themselves to dissolute men….. Men having deviated into heresy, iniquity will flourish, and the duration of life will therefore decrease.

Nevertheless, in the Visnu Parana there are also references to elements of the primordial or “Manu’s” race that have been preserved in this Dark Age in order to be the seed of new generations; what appears again is the well-known idea of a new and final epiphany “from above”:

When the practices taught by the Vedas and the institutes of law shall nearly have ceased, and the close of the Kali age shall be nigh, a portion of that divine being who exists of his own spiritual nature in the character of Brahma, and who is the beginning and the end, and who comprehends all things, shall descend upon the earth… He will then reestablish righteousness upon earth; and the minds of those who live at the end of the Kali age shall be awakened, and shall be pellucid as crystal. The men who are thus changed by virtue of that peculiar time shall be the seeds of new human beings, and shall give birth to a race who shall follow the laws of the Krita age, or age of purity (primordial age).

In the same text and chapter it is said that the stock from which this divine principal will be born lives in the village of Shambhala; Shambhala – as I previously suggested – refers to the metaphysics of the “center” and the “pole”, to the Hyperborean mystery and the forces of primordial tradition.

  • The land of Atlantis, also known as the Hyperborea of the Silver Age (Treta Yuga) was the second terrestrial homeland of the Hyperborean race. After the fall of the original Hyperborea, many of its inhabitants migrated to the southern continents of the world, while some journeyed and established a civilization in Atlantis, corresponding with the west and not with the south. Although many traditions describe variations of this mythical homeland, Plato was the first to discuss Atlantis by name in his discourses. Through Plato’s dialogue with Egyptian priests and initiates, the mythical land of Atlantis was known to western civilization. According to Plato, the island of Atlantis comprised of ten kingdoms that were situated in the North Atlantic. Aside from being an idyllic utopia, Atlantis was also described as a powerful military force and maritime power that conquered most of Europe and Africa. It is still unknown if the accounts of Plato were referring to the mass migration after the fall of the original Hyperborea or actual military incursions by the inhabitants of Atlantis, the former seems more probable. However, due to a “natural disaster”, the land of Atlantis was destroyed sometime around the 13th BC sometime after Pharaoh Ramses II’s death, with the vast majority of its inhabitants being killed in the flood and a small minority narrowly escaping that went on to establish new traditional centers across the world. This catastrophic flood ended the cycle of Atlantic mankind.

    Jürgen Georg Ferdinand Spanuth describes:
“Atlantis was Hyperborea and the calculations of Plato, the dates he recorded, must be considered according to a lunar calendar, giving the XIII century B.C. for the final destruction, a little after the death of Pharaoh Ramses II. The catastrophe would have happened with the passing of Halley’s Comet, described by the Greeks in the legend of Phaeton, son of the Sun God, Helios. Phaeton asked permission from his father to drive the Chariot of the Sun for a day. When the horses felt the reins were in the hands of a novice, they bolted and fell to earth. So that a Column of Fire devastated the world. The Nile dried up, fertile Libya became a desert, the remaining islands of Hyperborea were drowned. After fire came ice. Thanks to Zeus, who felt pity for the land and managed to divert the runaway chariot, which had destroyed Phaeton with its rays, the planet is saved. Phaeton falls into the North Sea where he is changed into Amber. His sisters, the Heliades, cry for him. This legend has been told, among others, by Ovid.”

So according to Spanuth, Atlantis was actually the original Hyperborea of the Golden Age. I disagree with his hypothesis, since the original Hyperborea existed beyond space and time as a terrestrial but immaterial homeland of the original Hyperboreans. The second Hyperborea was outside the conventional understanding of being, originating within the Golden Age on the physical earth and residing within the dominion of the Demiurge. It would be more appropriate to call Atlantis the lesser, “Third Hyperborea” given the collected mythology and history of this region.

Atlantis was the new terrestrial center modeled after the fallen Polar Regions with an “even climate and a benign sun”. Basileia was the capital of the Atlantis, ruled by a White Queen Mo-Uru (Gaia, the Virgin SHE-HE) whose memory is preserved in many ancient Aryan legends.  The White Queen Mo-Uru was a Virgin Goddess who gave birth to a son that was destined to be her husband, symbolizing the Rune Initiation of A-Mor, the Mystery of SHE-HE. This symbolizes the “Magical Wedding” that acts as a purifying initiation and alchemical transformation. Atlantis was ruled by twin-kings (possibly over Lumeria as well), who were the original queen and her son-husband the king of Atlantis. However, before the divine birth there existed only one “androgynous” being of both sexes, a balance of both essences and polarities, the SHE-HE and original man. The Atlantean society was not matriarchal, but corresponded to both masculine and feminine principles in perfect balance. After this virginal birth, both of the Twin Kings traveled to the original Hyperborea that was still not completely destroyed where they received their Aryan Initiation, allowing them to reunite with their ancestral blood memory, preserve the sacred vril, and communicate with the elder Hyperborean Gods that are not of this world.

The Twin Kings ruled over the inhabitants of Atlantis, the direct descendants of Hyperborea. Within Atlantis existed a small mixture of non-Aryan/Hyperborean inhabitants that came from Lumeria, originating from the Southern races that were made into slaves and were destined to reincarnation and karmic law. Similar to the fall of the original terrestrial Hyperborea, the Atlanteans committed the sin of sacred miscegenation and lost the original purity of their Hyperborean blood, “when the sons of God went to the daughters of men and had children by them”. Like all great civilizations, Atlantis slowly declined afterwards with its inhabitants becoming “giants” and ushering in the Bronze Age (Dwapara Yuga). The Atlanteans slowly degenerated into injustice, lust for power, and covetousness. A Hellenic myth describes the decadence of the Atlanteans as “men living in primordial times [to which Deucalion, who survived the Flood, belonged] were filled with arrogance and pride; they were guilty of many crimes; they broke oaths and were merciless.” The Hyperborean-Atlanteans were considered as descendants and disciples of the gods, but forfeited this divine gift by surrendering to their carnal natures and continual miscegenation with “the daughters of men”.

    Miguel Serrano further explains:
“The Aryan Siddhas would be at the peak of a racial pyramid. The other races, of colour, would not have had access to this Initiation, since they corresponded to the “slaves of Atlantis.” When the continent began to disappear, giving way to the Bronze Age, Dwapara-Yuga, the “slaves” dispersed through new lands, carrying the memory of wisdom unattainable by them in Atlantis, but which they now claimed to possess, distorting it. In the great chaos at the end of a Yuga, they may possibly have taken hold of some of the secrets, which they could never be able to use.”

Due to “Southern influences” and embracing the materialist ideals of the Demiurge, Atlantis fell into decline and was punished by the Hyperborean Gods. Plato writes that Zeus met with the other Hyperborean Gods on the summit of the polar mountain to discuss the fate of the decadent Atlanteans. Atlantis was to be destroyed by a giant wave that would completely submerge the island within a single night for their transgressions of sacred law.

Julius Evola elaborates further about the symbolic fall of Atlantis:
“The original cycle (when it reproduced and perpetuated the much older “polar” function), very often represented a nostalgic reference point for the fallen ones. By virtue of a transposition onto a different plane, the waters that submerged the Atlantic land were called “waters of death,” which the following postdiluvian generations, consisting entirely of mortal beings, must cross through initiation in order to be reintegrated with the divine state of the “dead,” namely, with the lost race. On this basis, the well-known figurations of the “Island of the Dead” could be understood in a similar sense as transformations of the memory of the sunken insular continent, 6 The mystery of paradise and of places of immortality in general was reconnected with the mystery of the West (and in some instances, of the North too), and thus it formed a body of traditional teachings the same way the theme of “Those Who Are Rescued from the Waters” and of “Those Who Do Not Drown In the Waters” shifted from the real, historical sense to a symbolic meaning and appeared in the legends of prophets, heroes, and initiates. Generally speaking, the symbols proper to that primordial race surface again in enigmatic ways until relatively recent times, wherever traditional conquering kings and dynasties made their appearance.”

A few of the Atlantean survivors of the great flood fled to Hollow Earth through the crater of a great volcano where “the dead who do not die” reside. Many others traveled through boats to different regions of the world, most notably Africa and the Middle East where they established the great Sumerian civilizations. Miguel Serrano describes that “the boats of the Flood ran around on the tops of the highest mountains of the earth. One was in the Caucasus, on Mount Ar-Ar-At, with a runic name: The Summit of the Aryans”. Other Atlantean migrations later arrived in modern-day Ireland, Denmark and Northern Germany.

    1. What is Wotanism?
    2. “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for White children” -14 words David Lane For generations folk of European decent have relied upon the teachings of middle eastern Philosophers written on decaying parchments called the Bible and the Torah also the Koran. Now Wotanism existed long before those principals were forced upon us in Europe. Wotanism is like the instinct that migrates birds to their natural habitat and causes the salmon to swim up stream. It is written in blood and not ink. It will never fade away. Wotanism will die when the last white man dies and no sooner. Wotanism is the pride you have when you hold up a new born child and realize it’s eyes are like yours. The ones who push the alien religion upon us might call that evil, but when you search your heart your soul laughs with joy and you know that it is good …. It is very good. The second precept of David Lanes 88 precepts states “Whatever peoples perception of God, or Gods or the motive force of the universe might be. They can hardly deny that Nature’s Laws are the work of, and therefore the intent of, that force.”

    3. Is Wotanism for everyone?
    4. No. Nature reveals to us the sacred beauty of diversity. That is why each folk family of the human race have developed and evolved each their own way to explore the wonders of their existence.

    5. If I don’t believe in Wotanism will I be eternally damned?
    6. No. We think that’s nonsense. Wotanism is belief in the natural order. Wotanists benefit by understanding their own roles in nature and helping to preserve it, including their own racial pride.

    7. Is racial pride hate?
    8. No, it’s love of one’s folk or family. A bear does not feel hate when protecting their cubs from predators.

    9. Are Wotanists political?
    10. Not in the modern sense . We do not acknowledge this political system as it violates natural law but we believe in being responsible especially concerning the environment and family issues.

    11. Do you use holy books or writings in Wotanism?
    12. 88 Precepts by David Lane
      Words of Havamal
      Carl Jung’s Essay On Wotan
      Works of Guido Von List
There are many great pieces of literature on Wotanism.

    13. How does one practice Wotanism?
    14. Precept #4 in David Lanes 88 Precepts states “The truest form of prayer is communion with nature. It is not vocal. Go to a lonely spot, if possible a mountaintop, on a clear, star-lit night, ponder the majesty and order of the infinite macrocosm. Then consider the intricacies of the equally infinite microcosm. Understand that you are on the one hand inconsequential beyond comprehension in the size of things, and on the other hand, you are potentially valuable beyond comprehension as a link in destiny’s chain. There you begin to understand how pride and self can co-exist with respect and reverence. There we find harmony with Nature and with harmony comes strength, peace and certainty.” Also, we have short rituals that we use to harmonize with nature. Study the 88 precepts, all the works of David Lane and other relevant sources.

There’s a legend that Aryans, led by Thor, fled a cataclysm to settle in old Tibet. Sven Hedin, the Swedish explorer of Central and Inner Asia, went as far as Tibet. He was a friend of Hitler’s and an outspoken admirer of NS Germany. As we shall see, the NS regime must have known much about Tibet and to have maintained contacts with that remote nation. It is claimed that the SS sponsored various expeditions there, and this now seems likely given some of the connections which are finally being reliably discovered. That the Germans were permitted to enter a land forbidden to other foreigners is likely given that the Dalai Lama of the time was an enthusiastic admirer of Hitler.

As far back as the early 1920s when the NS movement was struggling for power, the geopolitical theorist Prof. Karl Haushofer was teaching his pupils the geopolitical importance of Central Asia and Tibet. Among these pupils was Rudolf Hess who introduced Haushofer to Hitler at Landsberg Prison where the latter was confined as a result of the 1924 Munich Putsch. Haushofer had served on the Kaiser’s Staff Corps in the Orient and had studied the mysticism of Japan and India. He believed the Indo-Germanic race had originated in Asia, and control of the region was pivotal to Germanic world power. At this time there were two occult societies operating in Germany which were to have a lasting impact on NS, and especially on the SS which was to set up a department specifically to explore occultic matters, “Ancestral Heritage.” These societies were Thule and Vril. The Vril society was based on the ideas expounded by the Rosicrucian Sir Bulwer Lytton in his book The Coming Race. Lytton claimed that there is a psychic energy of immense power, latent in most humans, but being utilised by adepts living in Tibet. It is claimed that Haushofer introduced Hitler to both the vril concept and his geopolitical ideas. Intriguingly, there was already a Tibetan community resident in Germany with its own Lama. While many fanciful claims are made by pseudo-scholarly books on the Third Reich, one of the most intriguing is the assertion that large numbers of Tibetans in German uniform were found amidst the ruins of Berlin by the Soviet Army. An article recently published by the US paper The New Order sheds a uniquely reliable light on some of these Tibetan-German connections, based as it is on the autobiography of the present Dalai Lama.

During the 1920s the Dalai Lama was Thutpen Gyatso. He was a scholar of impressive intellect who sought to achieve a balance between Western technology and Eastern spirituality. He had heard about Hitler when the NS movement was still struggling for power. Among the many European books the Dalai Lama had translated was Mein Kampf. He filled his copy with enthusiastic annotations and underlining of his favourite passages on virtually every page. Of Hitler he said, “The inji (honourable foreigner) is assisted by God for some high purpose in this life.” He also believed there to be a synchronicity for the swastika being the symbol of both NS and the ancient Bon-Buddhism of his warrior monks. Also noted were certain similarities between NS and Buddhist doctrines, especially that service to one’s folk is the highest purpose or dharma in life. Therefore when Hitler became Chancellor in 1933 warm congratulations were received from far off Tibet.

During the 1940s Tibetan volunteers formed brigades attached to the Cossack regiments fighting Communism with NS Germany. The Tibetans with their endurance of sub-zero temperatures, refusal to surrender made them among the toughest fighters against the Soviets. They were exceptional horsemen and staged some of the last cavalry charges in history. It was the remnants of these brigades that the Soviet army found in the ruins of Berlin, having fought to the last. After the war, Tibet took those NS fighters who could make it into sanctuary. Among these was an Austrian, Heinrich Harrer, who became a close confident of the new Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso. Tenzin relates in his autobiography that Harrer was a delightful and humourous personality. He spoke fluent Tibetan and was well-liked by the Tibetans. Harrer had escaped British imprisonment in India during the war with another prisoner, and the two had lived as nomads for five years until reaching Lhasa. Harrer and Tenzin first met in 1948. For the next year and a half, before Harrer left they met about once a week. “From him I was able to learn something about the outside world and especially about Europe and the recent war.” Several years later the Tibetans were again in the frontline of the conflict between the materialist worldview and the spiritual/archetypal. Although the 80,000 troops of Red China overwhelmed the 8,500 Tibetan troops the Dalai Lama remarks, “it is necessary to say that the Chinese lost large numbers of men in their conquest of Tibet.”

While Tenzin might be portrayed as a pacifistic internationalist by the media and scraps such as the Nobel Peace Prize are thrown at him by a condescending world Liberalism whilst his nation is subjugated by genocidal Chinese, Tenzin remains an opponent of those materialistic forces bent on driving humanity into a universal drabness. He is, like the National Socialists for whom his countrymen once fought, a proponent of folkish and national diversity. Speaking at the 1993 Chicago Conference on World Religions, he said that the boundaries separating different peoples across the world were not bad if they preserved and defined genetic and cultural identities. He stated these differences need to be maintained in order that the individual have his own sense of identity. Tenzin is totally opposed to One Worldism, saying of the internationalists, they fail to see that the so-called “cultural diversity” they claim to admire would vanish in a One World system. No, true “cultural diversity” values the different material and spiritual achievements of a people uniquely different from all others on the planet. Therefore it cannot exist without the barriers which separate and identify culture from culture.” Today, while the Tibetans are exiled and exterminated, their cause should be a worthy one for all Folkists to uphold, just as the Tibetans themselves once gave their lives in the service of folkish dharma, from their remote homeland to the Russian steppes to the smoking ruins of Berlin.

What is Wotanism - Harold Thorsson
